The Bonus Army encampment in the summer of 1932 drew thousands of World War I veterans to Washington, D.C., where they pressed Congress for early payment of bonus certificates that were not due until 1945. In this view, men are gathered on the Capitol lawn, the place where they had come to make their case in person. The veterans, many of them unemployed during the Great Depression, camped in the city for weeks before the Hoover administration ordered them removed in late July. The print was made by Underwood & Underwood, a firm known for news and stereoscopic photography, and the caption data is unverified, so the exact moment should be read with that in mind.
