The chamber shown here is the House of Representatives in the U.S. Capitol, a room that by 1866 had already seen the country pass through secession, civil war, and the first steps of Reconstruction. This color lithograph from 1866 presents the body as a formal, orderly assembly, the kind of view that was popular with nineteenth-century audiences eager to see the seat of national lawmaking. The House had been meeting in its chamber in the south wing of the Capitol since 1857, and its members were debating some of the most contentious questions in American politics, including the terms for readmitting the former Confederate states. Notice how the lithographer tried to convey both the room's grandeur and the crowded galleries above the floor.
