Monument Place in Indianapolis in 1914 centers on the Soldiers and Sailors Monument, which had stood in the middle of Monument Circle since its dedication in 1902. The city then had roughly a quarter million residents and sat at the meeting point of several railroad lines, a position that supported its growing manufacturing base. Automobile makers had begun gathering in the city during the decade, and the Indianapolis Motor Speedway, opened in 1909, drew crowds and national attention. Streetcars and foot traffic moved shoppers and office workers along the streets that radiate from the Circle, past the stores and banks of the downtown business district. Residents knew Indianapolis as the state capital, and it was increasingly tied to the new motor age.
