Little Daylight is one of the portraits Edward S. Curtis made around 1905, when he was building the photographic survey that would become *The North American Indian*. The sitter wears a feathered headdress, the detail the record singles out, and the tight framing keeps attention on his face and regalia rather than on a setting. Curtis often posed his subjects in traditional dress, and his choices about costume, lighting and pose shaped how these images were received. The record does not say how this particular sitting was arranged, so viewers today read it both as a document of Native American life in the early twentieth century and as a product of Curtis's own artistic decisions.
