This portrait shows a man identified only as Little Eagle, a name that appears on the caption card and in the title. Photoprints like this one, registered for copyright and issued in numbered series around 1900, were widely sold as studio portraits and souvenirs, and the caption card's note that its data is unverified is worth keeping in mind. The card's brief tracing of "Indians" reflects how many such images were labeled in that period, often without the sitter's nation, dates, or own account of who he was. Viewers today can treat the picture as a record of how a Native sitter was presented to a commercial audience around the turn of the century.
