Rather than a plain game board, this 1860 woodcut turns sugoroku, a Japanese race game played with dice across a grid of squares, into satire. Its subjects are foreign visitors, smoking, and entertainers, and it was cut by the engraver Koizumi Minokichi. The year fell just after Japan opened its ports to foreign trade under the 1858 treaties, when Japanese printmakers often caricatured newcomers. How closely the print follows the game's rules is unclear, so its humor is best read through the individual scenes on its squares.
