Few Jerusalem churches are tied so closely to a single tradition as this one, which stands on the site long held to be the home of Saint Anne and the birthplace of the Virgin Mary. Crusaders built the church in the 12th century, and its plain, heavy stonework is among the best-preserved examples of that period in the city. Salzmann made the image for his survey of Jerusalem's monuments, published in Paris in 1856, the same year the Ottoman government gave the church to France, a gift that linked the building to French religious and political interests in the Holy Land.
