This crowd gathered in New York to honor the crew of the *Bremen*, the Junkers monoplane whose flyers, Hermann Köhl, Baron Ehrenfried Günther von Hünefeld, and James Fitzmaurice, made the first east-to-west crossing of the North Atlantic by air in April 1928. Their flight from Ireland ended on a remote island off Canada, so the city's parade was a chance for New Yorkers to celebrate them in person. The photograph captures the spectators packed along the route, the kind of civic welcome that New York reserved for major achievements of the day.
