The title on this glass negative carries a question mark, so the scene's exact subject is uncertain. It may show telephone switchboard work, radio operation, or both, a period when switchboards employed large numbers of women and radio was only beginning to reach homes. The plate is a copy negative, made from an earlier image and given to the Library of Congress by Herbert A. French in 1947. Streaks and other blemishes on the glass come from the original coatings deteriorating over time, and they are worth keeping in mind when judging fine detail.
