The Spirit of St. Louis, the single-engine monoplane Charles Lindbergh flew in May 1927, carries the name of the city whose business backers helped finance the flight. Lindbergh left Roosevelt Field on Long Island and landed near Paris about 33 hours later, becoming the first to make a solo nonstop flight from New York to Paris and claiming the Orteig Prize. This record comes from an old caption card whose details have not been verified, but the aircraft's link to St. Louis explains its place on this board.
