The title names Col. Charles B. Lamborn and his friends as the subjects, so this card is a group portrait rather than a view of the city. Gardner's Photographic Art Gallery in Washington issued it in 1867 as part of a series tied to the Union Pacific Railway's Eastern Division, a westward line that began in the Missouri River country. St. Louis, a major Mississippi River port and rail center, was a natural starting point for travelers heading west, and the card's stereo format was meant to give viewers a sense of depth as they looked through a viewer.
