Named for the St. Louis businessmen who helped finance it, the Spirit of St. Louis was the single-engine monoplane Charles Lindbergh flew solo across the Atlantic in May 1927, landing at Le Bourget outside Paris after about 33 hours in the air. The flight made him an international celebrity almost overnight and showed that a lone pilot could cross the ocean, helping turn commercial aviation into a serious business. The caption card dating this view is unverified, so its exact details are best read with some caution.
