A car carrying an Illustrious Potentate, the head of a local Shriners temple, is the focus here, and the picture captures the fez-and-motorcade pageantry the fraternal order was known for in the early 1900s. The Shriners, formally the Ancient Arabic Order of the Nobles of the Mystic Shrine, held large public parades, and their decorated automobiles drew crowds in cities across the country. The negative belongs to the National Photo Company Collection, the work of a Washington studio that recorded the capital's streets and events, and Herbert A. French gave it to the Library of Congress in 1947. The glass plate shows streaks and blemishes from the natural breakdown of its original coating, so some fine detail is softened.
