Few plates in Roberts's Holy Land series show a people as directly as this one, which depicts Arabs of the Benisaid tribe as Roberts saw them on February 17, 1839. He sketched the scene on the spot during his journey through Egypt, Syria and the Holy Land, and the lithographer Louis Haghe turned the drawings into color plates for the London edition issued by F.G. Moon between 1842 and 1845. Victorian readers prized such images as a window onto a region few of them would ever visit. Its value lies in the close attention to dress and bearing, recorded by a draftsman working from life.
