The sloop *Volunteer*, modeled by Boston designer Edward Burgess for General Charles J. Paine, was among the most closely watched yachts of its day. Launched in 1887, she defended the America's Cup that year against the Scottish challenger *Thistle* in the races off New York. Currier & Ives issued this chromolithograph in New York around the same time, showing the boat under sail while American interest in yacht racing was at a peak. The Boston link is worth noting, since a local designer and a local owner stood behind a boat that carried national attention.
