Recruiting posters like this one asked young American men to join the aviation service just months after the United States entered the First World War in April 1917. The Army's flying branch was small and badly short of pilots, mechanics and ground crews, so such posters pitched military aviation as a chance for technical skill, adventure and a place in a new kind of warfare. Posters were meant to be read quickly on city streets and in train stations, so their bold messages carried most of the persuasion. What makes this one worth a closer look is how it blends patriotic duty with the appeal of a profession that was still only a few years old.
