Its title, "Give 'er the gun," is pilot's slang for opening the throttle, and the poster asks viewers to join the Army Air Service with a dramatic airplane in full flight. The Air Service was the U.S. Army's aviation arm from 1918 until 1926, and in its early years it struggled to attract men once the war ended. Posters like this one tried to make a technical, dangerous branch sound exciting to young men. The record credits Joseph Binder as artist and dates the print to 1919, though the date is marked with a question mark, so it may be approximate.
