The recruiting poster titled "The U.S. Air Service Needs Carpenters, Cabinet Makers & Wood Workers" dates to 1917, the year the United States entered the First World War. Its focus is unusual among wartime posters: rather than calling for combat soldiers, it appeals to skilled tradesmen, since early military aircraft were built largely of wood, spruce frames and laminated parts that needed hands experienced in joinery and finishing. Aviation was still young in 1917, and the Army's aviation branch had to recruit craftsmen as well as pilots to build and repair the machines. The poster is a useful reminder that the war effort depended on civilian skills as much as on the front lines.
