This picture shows Theodore Roosevelt at Sagamore Hill, his family home on the North Shore of Long Island near Oyster Bay, New York. It was reproduced as a halftone in *Town & Country* on June 7, 1902, while Roosevelt was serving his first full term after succeeding William McKinley in 1901. The house, which he had built in 1885, was his retreat from Washington and remains a national historic site. The halftone process of the period made it possible to print photographs like this one in magazines, so the image also shows how illustrated periodicals of the time presented presidents to the public.
