Karnak, the vast temple complex near Luxor on the east bank of the Nile, is the subject of this color lithograph, which David Roberts drew on the spot during his travels in Egypt and Nubia. Roberts, a Scottish painter, sketched the ruins in the late 1830s, and Louis Haghe turned those sketches into stone-printed plates for *Egypt & Nubia*, published in London by F.G. Moon between 1846 and 1849. The temple grew over many centuries, and its towering pylons and columns, dedicated largely to the god Amun, show how the Egyptian builders worked on a monumental scale. Roberts's views helped shape European images of ancient Egypt for a generation of readers.
