Rather than a view of the monument alone, this 1852 map places the Washington National Monument within the city as it stood while the obelisk was rising. The cornerstone had been laid on July 4, 1848, and the site sat on open ground where the city's planned avenues were still largely undeveloped. Maps from this period are useful for seeing how sparse the surrounding streets and grounds were. Construction halted in 1854 for lack of funds and did not resume until 1879, so the monument's unfinished state in this era is part of what makes the map worth studying.
