This 1754 map predates the Revolutionary War it is filed under, and it reflects Washington's earlier service as a young Virginia officer. That year he led colonial troops into the Ohio Valley, where competing British and French claims set off the conflict later called the French and Indian War. Maps like this one helped commanders understand the terrain, the routes between forts, and the waterways that mattered for supply and movement. Its value today lies in showing how Washington learned the frontier country and military mapmaking before he led the Continental Army.
