The only identification for this glass negative is the name W.H. Morris, taken from an unverified note on its sleeve, so who he was and why he was photographed remain open questions. The image was made by the wet collodion process, in which a photographer coated a glass plate, exposed it, and developed it while the coating was still wet. That method dominated photography from the early 1850s into the 1880s. Dated 1860, the negative predates the outbreak of the Civil War in 1861, yet it is filed in a collection of war-era photographs, a reminder that archives often group images by subject rather than by when they were made. The photographer, David B. Woodbury, died in 1866.
