Seen from the front, the bronze figure at Kamakura is a seated Amida Buddha, cast in 1252 and still sitting in the open air at Kōtoku-in temple, where its great hall was lost to storms centuries ago. Arnold Genthe, the German-born American photographer best known for his portraits and his views of San Francisco, made this gelatin silver print in 1908. The statue was already a popular stop for foreign travelers by then, and Genthe's image shows how its calm, weathered presence stood apart from the temple grounds around it.
