The Spaarne is the river that winds through the center of Haarlem, the historic city in the western Netherlands, and this view turns its waterfront into a study in soft color. The photochrom process behind it was a Swiss method that printed photographs in several colored layers, and the Detroit Publishing Company sold these prints in the United States as travel views from the late 1890s into the early 1900s. Because the record dates it only to between about 1890 and 1900, the exact year is uncertain, but the scene reflects the everyday canal life of a Dutch town at the time.
