The title sets its own clock, counting the years from March 1, 1871, when the French National Assembly ratified the preliminary peace that ceded Alsace to the new German Empire after the Franco-Prussian War. The image comes from 1918, the year that ended that German rule. French troops entered Alsace in the weeks after the armistice of November 11, 1918, and the scenes of welcome that followed became a powerful symbol of national recovery. Prints like this one were widely circulated in France to celebrate the return of the region, so the work reflects both the wartime mood and the emotional weight of reunion.
