Its German headline, *Sammelt Brennessel!*, urges people to gather stinging nettles, and the promise of clothing and thread shows how keenly the wartime textile shortage was felt. The Allied blockade cut Germany off from imported cotton, wool and flax, so wild plants were pressed into service, since nettle stalks can be processed into a coarse fiber. Printed in color in 1918, the lithograph shows girls as the collectors, reflecting how young people were enlisted in home-front drives during the war's final year.
