Here the home front is asked to grow its own cooking oil. The German text urges readers to plant sunflowers and poppies, whose seeds yield oil, so they can "create German oil" and serve the Fatherland. The appeal reflects the severe fat shortage of the First World War, when the British naval blockade cut off imports of oils and fats and rationing followed. Gipkens, a German graphic artist, turned a practical gardening task into patriotic duty by framing it with bright flower imagery.
