Und Ihr? Zeichnet Kriegsanleihe" translates roughly as "And you? Subscribe to the war loan," and the question in the title is the poster's main appeal. Its subject headings point to a German military airman, a figure meant to draw civilians at home into the war effort by asking them to lend their savings to the state. Germany paid for much of its First World War spending through a series of these bond drives, and posters like this one, dated 1918, were a central way of reaching people in cities and towns. Its direct wording and heroic imagery show how wartime governments tried to turn personal duty into financial support.
