Few posters from the Habsburg home front pair a war loan appeal with a classical goddess, and this one, titled "Zeichnet 8. Kriegsanleihe" ("Subscribe to the 8th War Loan"), does so in a large color lithograph. The Austro-Hungarian government issued a series of war loans to fund the First World War, and posters like this one urged citizens to buy state bonds as a patriotic duty. The artist's signature, K. Sterrer, marks it as the work of an Austrian graphic artist working in the propaganda campaigns of 1917. Its allegorical figure reflects a common wartime tactic of presenting the state as a protective, idealized presence.
