Its German-language call to "subscribe" to the fourth Austrian war loan sets this 1916 color lithograph apart from the many bond posters issued across the Habsburg lands. Austria-Hungary, like the other belligerents, leaned heavily on borrowing to pay for the war, and the state turned to ordinary households through a series of bond issues as the conflict dragged on. Posters such as this one, signed by A. Karpellus, combined soldiers and flags to tie private savings to the war effort. The design shows how wartime finance was presented as a patriotic duty.
