This color lithograph takes its title from a declaration that the deputies of Alsace-Lorraine read before the National Assembly at Bordeaux on March 1, 1871, when the assembly was voting on peace terms after the Franco-Prussian War. The deputies protested the cession of their provinces to Germany. Forty-three years later, in 1914, the poster was printed as wartime propaganda, and its message of loyalty to France and hope for the provinces' return would have resonated strongly with French audiences at the start of World War I. The signature, "L. Jonas," appears on the design.
