Horns Hole is a riverside spot in Hawick, a textile town on the Teviot in the Scottish Borders, and this print renders it in the soft, saturated color that made photochrom views popular. The process, developed by the Photoglob firm in Zürich, built a color image from several lithographic stones, one for each hue. The Detroit Publishing Company sold these views in America, and this one appears as print number 13083 in its 1905 catalog. The picture dates from roughly the 1890s, when such scenes of Scotland and Europe reached American buyers as travel keepsakes.
