This view takes its name from Stepend, Bing, near Cumnock in Ayrshire, a small locality rather than a famous landmark, so it records an everyday corner of the Scottish countryside. Cumnock lay in a region shaped by coal and ironstone mining in the nineteenth century, and the landscape of the Ayrshire valleys reflected that industrial past. The image was made by the photochrom process, in which a black-and-white photograph was transferred to a series of lithographic stones, each inked in a different color, and the layers were printed in register to build up the final picture. Detroit Publishing Company, which held American rights to the process, issued this print with its catalog number in the early twentieth century, and its Scottish views were sold widely as travel souvenirs.
