Lookout Mountain, the long ridge that rises above the Tennessee River near Chattanooga, is the place named here, though the title carries a question mark, so the exact view is only tentatively identified. The two glass plates were made in 1861 by David B. Woodbury, who died in 1866, using the wet collodion process. Stereographs like this pair were meant to be seen through a viewer for a three-dimensional effect, and they were popular in parlors in the years around the war, so the image also shows how photographs of the period reached ordinary homes.
