Its brown background distinguishes it from many other cards of the period, and the title "Brown Backgrounds" was devised by Library staff to identify this series, T207. The American Tobacco Company issued such cards in 1912 as inserts in tobacco products, a common marketing tactic that turned small pasteboard cards into prized collectibles. The relief halftone printing and color reproduction show the commercial art techniques of the 1910s, when mass-produced images were becoming a fixture of everyday life. The card is part of the Benjamin K. Edwards Collection of baseball cards held by the Library of Congress.
