Set against a plain brown field, this card takes its title from that background, a label the Library's staff devised rather than one printed on the card. The American Tobacco Company issued cards like it as premiums packed with its cigarettes, a common marketing tactic of the period that encouraged collectors to keep buying. The brown backgrounds gave the series its popular nickname. The relief halftone printing in color shows how far commercial illustration had advanced by the 1910s. Cards from the Benjamin K. Edwards Collection now document both the game and early mass-produced printing.
