Brown Backgrounds is a title the Library's staff devised for this card, which belongs to the T207 series and takes its name from the warm brown field behind each player's portrait. Dated 1912 and issued by the American Tobacco Company, it was the kind of card inserted into cigarette packages, where it stiffened the pack and gave buyers a reason to keep purchasing in search of a complete set. Printed as a color relief halftone, it shows how far commercial reproduction had advanced by the early 1910s, when baseball was among the country's most popular pastimes. The card is part of the Benjamin K. Edwards Collection of baseball cards held by the Prints and Photographs Division.
