What sets this card apart is its brown background, the feature that gives the T207 series its popular name. The American Tobacco Company issued these cards inserted in cigarette packages to stiffen them, and the Library's record dates this example to 1912. The color halftone printing placed a player's portrait against a plain, dark field, a design that differed from many of the brighter cards of the period. Collectors of the 1910s often traded and saved these cards, so surviving examples now document both the players and the tobacco marketing that helped spread baseball imagery.
