The brown background is what sets this card apart from the other versions of the T207 set, which came in several background colors. The American Tobacco Company issued these small cardboard pictures in the early 1910s, when tobacco makers slipped cards into cigarette packs to promote their brands and give buyers something to collect. The set is large, with hundreds of players, and collectors still study its color variations. The title "Brown Backgrounds" was devised by Library of Congress staff rather than printed on the card itself.
