The "Brown Backgrounds" label is the Library's own, assigned because the card itself carries no title, and it singles out the brown-background variants within the T207 tobacco set. American Tobacco Company inserted these cards into its cigarette packs around 1911 and 1912, when the company used baseball players as a popular lure for buyers. The set's background colors differ from card to card, so collectors sort the issue by hue as well as by player. This example is one of the color relief halftone prints in the Benjamin K. Edwards Collection of baseball cards.
