Lake George, a long, narrow body of water in the Adirondack foothills of eastern New York, was among the first American scenic spots to draw tourists in large numbers, and this lithograph by F. F. Palmer captures it as a place of leisure and wonder. Palmer, a prolific landscape artist, drew the scene for Currier & Ives, the New York firm that turned out inexpensive colored prints for a broad middle-class market. By the 1860s, steamboats carried visitors up the lake, and hotels along its shores catered to them, so the print doubled as a souvenir and an advertisement for the region's appeal.
