For Czech Independence" is the poster's own call, printed in Czech above a color lithograph of eagles and crosses, and it targets Czech Americans rather than the general public. Its notes credit a Czechoslovak recruiting office in New York, with the Presbyterian Church in the U.S.A. as sponsor, which suggests the campaign drew on both immigrant organizing and American religious networks. In 1918, Czech and Slovak leaders abroad were pressing the Allies for an independent state, and enlistment in the Czechoslovak Legion was one way for emigrants to support that cause. The eagle and cross motifs were common in wartime posters of the period, and they help explain the message's appeal to a community that sought both national and moral claims.
