The Czech text on this 1918 piece carries three slogans: a call for national independence, a battle cry against the enemy, and an appeal for democracy. They reflect the final months of World War I, when Czech and Slovak leaders at home and abroad pressed for a state free of Habsburg rule. Czechoslovakia proclaimed its independence on October 28, 1918, weeks before the armistice ended the fighting. The pairing of combat language with a political goal of nationhood is what makes the piece worth a closer look.
