Four Meigs children sit in a small cart pulled by a donkey, with a dog nearby, in a scene a note kept with the case says was made in Detroit, Michigan. That note also says the donkey was bought from two French trappers and missionaries to the Indians who had come down from the northwest forests, a detail that hints at how unusual such a pet would have seemed. Their father, Lt. Montgomery C. Meigs of the Army Corps of Engineers, later served as Quartermaster General of the Union Army during the Civil War. The photographer is unidentified, but the hallmark on the plate and the style of the case help place the picture in the early 1850s.
