This half-plate daguerreotype shows the Hinckley family of Albany, New York, posed full length: Dr. John Warren Hinckley, his wife, a son, and their daughter Isabella, who lived from 1840 to 1862. The plate is credited to Mathew Brady's studio, and a scratched notation on its face names "Dr. Hinckley, Albany," while the back reads "Sept 53." Gold toning, applied after development, deepened the silver image and gave it a warmer tone, a finish that helped these fragile mirror-like portraits last.
