Washington's second inauguration took place in Congress Hall in Philadelphia, which served as the nation's capital in 1793, and this print depicts that setting. The subject headings point to arrivals and departures and to carriages, details that suggest the crowds and officials gathering for the brief March ceremony. J.L.G. Ferris painted the original as a conjectural scene, since he was imagining the event rather than recording it. This color halftone was issued around 1947 by The Foundation Press as part of its Pageant of a Nation series, which made historical paintings widely available in printed form.
