Washington appears at Christ Church in Philadelphia on Easter Sunday, 1795, when the city was the national capital and he was in his second term as president. The painter, Jean Leon Gerome Ferris, specialized in scenes of colonial and Revolutionary America, and this color halftone was reproduced around 1908 by Brown & Bigelow of St. Paul, a firm that produced many prints for home and office display. Christ Church was the congregation Washington attended while in Philadelphia, and the building still stands today. The print reflects the early twentieth-century interest in reimagining the nation's founding years through period costume and familiar settings.
