Harper's Weekly ran this wood engraving by R. Staudenbaur, made after a painting by Charles Willson Peale, on its front cover on May 4, 1889. The timing fits the centennial of Washington's inauguration as the first president in 1789, when the nation looked back on its founder with great interest. Peale, a painter of the Revolutionary generation, had portrayed Washington from life several times, so the image draws on a firsthand artistic tradition. Wood engraving let a weekly magazine reproduce a painting in quantity, which helped shape how many Americans pictured the general.
