Washington stands here with his hat and cane, a pose that presents a composed gentleman rather than a soldier in action. The image is a mezzotint, made by roughening a copper plate and burnishing smooth areas to build soft tones well suited to portraits. Prints like this spread widely in the late 1700s and early 1800s, when the young republic wanted images of its leading general. Because the title names him as General, it reflects his public career more than his boyhood at home.
